"Gonda and Hendrik met in Amsterdam's Lutheren orphanage, and were
raised and schooled there. My Dad emigrated to Indonesia (the former Dutch
East Indies) in 1928. Getting wedded by "long distance" in July
of the following year, my mother joined him shortly after and indeed,
they initially settled in Batavia (Djakarta). After a while, my Dad was
transferred to Surabaia, where I was born. After the war, my parents briefly
returned to Holland to recouperate, in February '47. My Dad was called
back to the job in August of that year, while my mother, sister amnd I
followed in August of '48. Indonesia became independent in 1949, and the
three of us returned to Holland in July of 1950. My Dad, who was going
to accompany us, was taken off the boat by the government, as he was the
only Dutch banking official left, and he had to stay on for yet another
year. he joined us in Holland, November 1951. My Dad died in Holland,
after having retired from three jobs (the one in Indonesia, plus later,
two more in Holland)in the Hague in 1983, and my mother two years later.
